Mary Astor

BACKSTORY: Born as Lucille Langhanke, she is little known today but very recognizable thanks to some of her more memorable movie roles in "The Maltese Falcon," "Meet Me In St. Louis," and "Return to Peyton Place." She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in “The Great Lie” (1941) with Bette Davis. Her final role was in Davis' film "Hush…Hush Sweet Charlotte." Her 1959 autobiography, My Story: An Autobiography, was a bestseller and told of her domineering father who emotionally abused her into mental submission, how her secret romance with John Barrymore helped loosen those bonds, and the highly publicized custody case for her daughter Marylyn which involved her scandalous diary.
